Why It’s Recommended to Inflate Your Inflatable Paddleboard to 12-15 PSI

Inflatable stand-up paddleboards (iSUPs) are popular among water sports enthusiasts due to their portability, easy storage, and versatility. One common question from beginners is, "My board feels stiff at 7 PSI—should I inflate it more?" To answer this, it's essential to understand the benefits of sufficient inflation.

Optimal Rigidity and Performance

As the pressure increases, an inflatable paddleboard becomes stiffer and performs more like a traditional hardboard, which is crucial for stability and control. A lower pressure board can feel soft and bendy, sagging in the middle, which makes balancing and paddling more difficult. Inflating your iSUP to 12-15 PSI is ideal and allows the board to maintain rigidity sufficient to support even two adults.

Why Not Inflate to a Higher Pressure?

Maintaining the correct pressure is essential for the longevity of your board. Most inflatable paddleboards are made from high-quality PVC and reinforced with drop-stitch technology, helping them maintain their shape at this pressure. Over-inflation can cause deformation in the materials and seams, leading to issues like leaks over time. The internal pressure of your board can change due to temperature fluctuations, such as when it’s left out in the sun for extended periods. This is why some lower-quality boards may even burst under these conditions.

By the way, Marcello paddleboards can withstand pressures over 20 PSI, so there’s no need to worry. Just inflate your board to the recommended pressure, and you’re all set to enjoy your time on the water.
